To what extent does an artwork create itself? And how much of the final product is a result of the artists’ guiding hand? I sometimes get the impression that most my works seem to make themselves. It’s as if they have all these opinions regarding what they want to be/look like/say, and I find my role in the process reduced to that of collaborator instead of creator. In my work I usually get my inspiration from biology, philosophy and science. I am interested in notions of emergence, the(non existent?) border between nature and culture,and in all imaginable kinds of natural phenomena and processes. I am especially interested in emergence or how human, animal, or other objects function as systems within a network. I think it is important, that we, human objects place ourselves in a more modest position in relation to other living and non living objects.

Voor een belangrijk deel gaat mijn werk over het oprekken van de notie ‘kunstenaarschap’. Dit doe ik op verschillende manieren. Zo geloof ik niet in een puur en autonoom maakproces en werk ik daarom veel met anderen kunstenaars, maar ook niet-kunstenaars samen. Ik heb bijvoorbeeld voor het doorlopende project ‘The Companion Species as Artist’ een installatie gemaakt in samenwerking met mijn hondenmetgezel Wiske.
Wiske Heemskerk
Wiske is een hond en heeft daarom een totaal andere kijk op het kunstenaarschap dan de meeste menselijke kunstenaars. Haar werk bestaat voor een groot deel uit het graven van kuilen en markeren. Hiervoor wordt de omgeving middels voornamelijk het reukorgaan uitvoerig onderzocht, en wordt er rekening gehouden met details die voor veel mensen volledig onzichtbaar zijn. Door Wiskes werk te erkennen als kunst, krijgt de bezoeker een nieuw perspectief op diens eigen omgeving.

Eva Meijer is schrijver, kunstenaar en filosoof. Ze doet onderzoek naar de grenzen van de taal en beter luisteren naar dieren.
Olli Meijer
Olli Meijer werd geboren in Pascani, Roemenië, maar woont en werkt alweer een tijd in Nederland. Hij graaft kuilen en samen met Eva Meijer onderzoekt hij de taal en politiek van hond-mensrelaties (zie bv Stray Philosophy, Journal for Critical Animal Studies, 2015).

Marit Mihklepp is an Estonian artist based in the Netherlands where she graduated from interdisciplinary ArtScience MA program in The Hague. Her works are exploring the existing and speculative communication systems between humans and other-than-humans, often using instructions and objects to be activated by the audience. She is interested how collaborative practices with stones, bacteria, everyday objects open spaces for alternative understandings of human life, less based on possession and power. Mihklepp’s works have taken the form of performative lectures, participatory experiences, drawings on human skin, microbial perfume collections, publications in the matchbox. Lately, she has exhibited pieces investigating the differences of time perception between human and stone bodies. Her latest exhibitions include “Artefact 2019: Parallel Crossings” (STUK, BE), OTHERWISE festival-as-research (Gessnerallee Zürich, CH), “Performance Objects Bodies” (TETEM and Quartair, NL). Mihklepp is part of Haagse Kunstenaars (Stroom Den Haag).
Miek Zwamborn

Miek Zwamborn is schrijver, vertaler en beeldend kunstenaar. In haar werk spelen landschap en geschiedenis een belangrijke rol. Aan de hand van historisch beeldmateriaal, reisverslagen en wetenschappelijke rapporten pluist zij bestaande verhalen na om met deze fragmenten via verschillende media een koppeling naar het heden te maken. Zij publiceerde de romans Oploper (2000), Vallend Hout (2004) en de dichtbundel Het krieken van sepia (2008). In 2013 verscheen haar derde roman De duimsprong en in 2017 het essayistische natuurboek Wieren bij uitgeverij Van Oorschot. Momenteel woont en werkt ze op het Isle of Mull waar ze met Rutger Emmelkamp Knockvologan Studies opzette, een centrum voor kunst, literatuur, wetenschappelijk onderzoek en natuurbehoud. Daar leren ze luisteren naar het landschap en onderzoeken ze hoe mensen zich beter in de wereld kunnen wortelen. Rutger Emmelkamp is a Dutch artist, teacher and program maker. He studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven in the mid 90s and finished his BA in fine arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam in 2001. He has had solo and group exhibitions in The Netherlands and abroad and has initiated multiple group exhibitions. Alongside his studio practice, Rutger has been teaching in various art disciplines for more than ten years and was appointed head of the Jewellery Department in 2013. Rik Möhlmann

In my work, I explore the plasticity of computer graphics and synthetic sound with an inquisitive and spontaneous approach. In my digital paintings, drawings, video installations and abstract musical compositions, I cultivate the flaws and rawness that come with human spontaneity. In this way I aim to sustain a certain intimacy towards the analog world within digital toolsets, symbols and interfaces. Like this, the artistic use of new media becomes a discipline of inquiry about the body, the senses, materiality, nature and identity, contemplated as projections of an inner technology.
